Register is a visual and editorial reinterpretation of the index from Smut: An Anatomy of Dirt by Christian Enzensberger.
Starting from its register, I developed a system that transforms the structure and repetition of listed words into a visual language. After classifying the entries based on the number of subitems, clusters were formed. Each cluster became a page, structured in columns that reflect the page numbers in which the terms appear. The frequency and distribution of these words suggest something about the original book’s composition—its rhythm, content shifts, and internal logic.
The result is a publication where the index becomes content, the text becomes pattern, and a hidden structure emerges as image. It is both analysis and abstraction, exploring how meaning can arise through form.
