This interdisciplinary design project explores how virus structures—specifically those of the Picornaviridae family—can be visually modeled by drawing on their geometric foundations. Created in collaboration with Joosten Mueller, the project bridges scientific theory and visual communication, questioning how we understand invisible phenomena through images.
The publication reflects on existing visualization models in virology and investigates their limits and didactic value. Inspired by educational charts and scientific textbooks, the visual concept combines soft color palettes, bold yet neutral typography, and a reduced, contemporary layout. The aim was to make complex content accessible and engaging to both scientific and design audiences.
Additional teaching materials, including a fold-out chart and a buildable paper model, were developed to support comprehension and model literacy in both educational and research contexts.
The work was published in the series CLOU – Cluster Letters of Understanding by the Humboldt University’s Cluster of Excellence “Image Knowledge Gestaltung” in 2019.
