Longing Beach Cars and Dresses is a personal reflection on memory identity and displacement. The work consists of eight colored pencil drawings based on photographs from my childhood in Portugal created before I emigrated to Germany at the age of eight. These everyday images carry emotional layers and trace a presence that remains through absence.
Many of the photos include cars which became symbols of movement and memory. They recall family road trips the rhythm of the road and moments of transition between places. Drawing them with materials associated with childhood allowed me to reconnect with those memories in a slow reflective process.
Rather than aiming for realism the drawings explore how memory shifts fades and transforms. This work speaks to the universal experience of longing for places people and versions of ourselves and how personal images can hold a deeper language of identity.
Exhibited at Museu de Aveiro Santa Joana as part of the group exhibition Sala Fria.
